Kaleidoscope: The Smithsonian Resilience Project

Project Overview

Kaleidoscope is the Smithsonian’s first-ever pan-institutional initiative, with each participating museum, library, and research center exploring the concept of resilience through the unique lens of their collection of objects and stories.

Philanthropist Adrienne Arsht funded the omnichannel campaign and online exhibition with the vision of creating space for Gen Z and younger Millennials to reflect, connect, and act based on research showing that when we reflect on our shared existence, we can better connect with our communities and environments, inspiring us to take action to create positive change. Empowered by the lessons of the past and the stories of the present, the Kaleidoscope project aims to help pave the way for a brighter future.

Forum One conducted primary and secondary audience research to devise a comprehensive approach united by a cohesive brand identity. Additionally, the visuals and experiences were co-created with Gen Z and younger Millennials to ensure relevance and authenticity.

In its first six months, this multi-year campaign has reached 3.5 million people through Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, YouTube, Hulu/Disney+, website, physical signage, and over 20 Smithsonian digital properties. Through the campaign, many Gen Z and younger millennials who live outside the DC area have had their first experience with the Smithsonian, with the campaign reaching more than 5,000 members of Gen Z and younger millennials in each of the 50 states.
