Hamburgers, Calendars, Generation Z…

What We’re Talking About is a blog series featuring the articles, websites, topics, and trends that the Forum One team has been chatting about.

This week we talked about this article from Fiona Foster about the hamburger menu and how designers should be exploring better alternatives. She’s not the first person to suggested we never order a hamburger menu again, but she does provide a lot of context and explanation so it’s a worthy read. Given how prolific the hamburger menu is on mobile these days, we’d venture to say it’s not going anywhere anytime soon, but there are definitely opportunities out there to implement some of the ideas that Foster puts forth. Do you have a project that would be a good opportunity to try a new mobile navigation pattern?

It’s almost the end of the year (what???). A lot of folks out there are more than ready to say goodbye to 2016, and if you’re one of those people, consider getting yourself a 2017 calendar to have something to look forward to. This week, Design Milk posted a great list of 20 modern calendars that might interest you—why have a calendar if it’s no fun to look at, right? Or if it’s no fun to pop, in this one’s case. And speaking of calendars, if you’re a fan of user experience (and who isn’t?), bookmark this online advent calendar for a daily dose of knowledge!

As the year ends, we get another year away from the technology that has gone the way of the Dodo. Are you someone who still remembers dial-up internet? Most (perhaps all) of us here at Forum One do. What about floppy disks? Payphones? Think about it—when was the last time you saw a functioning payphone? Isn’t that crazy? Well, it’s not if you’re part of Generation Z. If you’re feeling nostalgic (and not afraid to feel a little old), have a look at this infographic of technologies that generation wouldn’t recognize. Wow. If you really want to experience it, look at it while you’re listening to this. Ah, memories. Or nightmares, I suppose…

And finally, take a few minutes to watch this real-life, short-film version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Who knew it would sound so Shakespearean?

Are you ready to create impact?

We'd love to connect and discuss your next project.
