News ReleaseChangemakers.net to Launch 'Sports for a Better World' CompetitionSeptember 13, 2007 Changemakers.net, the innovative and fast-growing "collaborative competitions" and social entrepreneurship initiative at Ashoka, will launch the "Sports for a Better World" competition in partnership with Nike in mid-September. This competition follows the successful "Disruptive Innovations in Health and Health Care," which received 308 innovative entries from 27 countries. In support of these results the Roberts Woods Johnson Foundation is providing up to $5 million to fund disruptive innovations in the United States. Changemakers.net partners with groups like the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, National Geographic, and Nike to sponsor global competitions for innovative solutions to social problems around the world in a sophisticated web-based format. Each 8-week Changemakers.net competition is surfacing several hundred innovative ideas from more than 30 countries on average. In each competition, entrants view each other's entries, dialogue with the public and a panel of topical experts, and can continue refining their entries up to the deadline date. Winners receive nominal cash prizes; are exposed to potential investors, each other, and the press; and they gain access to a range of web-based tools provided by Changemakers.net for continuing their work. Public enthusiasts also support the participating innovators in a range of ways, and the Changemakers.net team uses the information gathered to analyze where innovative work is occurring (or not) within each social sector, which informs other programs and investments. Competitions relating to global sanitation and safe drinking water will launch in the upcoming months. Forum One has been providing strategic planning, web development, and online community development support since 2006 for this rapidly growing program. Contact |
